Cohiba Esplendiddleedoos..no thanks!

August 24th, 2007

Good grief! does one day go by without someone phoning to say ” Hi I just got back from Cuba with a very valuable box of Cohiba Esplendidos that I need to sell” to which my standard reply is ” great but we only buy the special vintage edition glass top boxes!!

So …. anyone from the UK is reading this, here is my advice:

-If you are going to Cuba have a fabulous time…it’s paradise for cigars smokers for sure

-If you are a cigar smoker, only buy from an official cigar store i.e. La Casa del Habano. Every cigar you are offered on the streets is fake regardless of what “story” you are told about ” my brothers hedgehog lives in the roof of the Partagas factory and managed to steal a box of cigars out of the factory and I’m selling them for 3 Pesos only gringo”

-If you are not a cigar smoker, don’t waste your time and money buying cigars and trying to sell them to me or anyone else….you have wasted your money and are wasting everyone’s time!

Cigars are sold in the UK by cigar merchants supplied by Hunters and Frankau the official distributors of Havanas in the UK.The cigars are duty paid ( yuk…damn tax in the UK) and strictly quality controlled to ensure that the cigars are of the best quality available,

Oh and for the uninitiated….there is no such thing as a “sealed box of Havanas” in the UK as Hunters and Frankau open and check every box of Havanas…if they would not….C.Gars Ltd would. That’s what you get when you buy the finest cigars from a cigar merchant that was established in 1817 and an importer that places quality of their Havanas beyond anything.

:-)

Congrats to Laura’s daughter Gemma on the birth of her baby “Summer Rose” ….so now Laura has had her baby Molly this year,Gemma has had a baby and we are just waiting for Laura’s mother Joy to announce that she is also ……..Ummm …maybe I shouldn’t even suggest it! Oh well any excuse to break out the cigars and champagne I guess

Por Larranaga Magnificos now due last week September…should have some interesting vintage cigar offerings in September as well ( if I don’t smoke them first!)

Well I’m looking forward to another washout bank holiday weekend in the UK no doubt continuing the worst summer weather on record…I think I’ll zip over to France for a change of scene and smoke some Monte 2’s with some decent Bordeaux

Have a great weekend.

Peaceful puffing and long ashes

Texas herfing :-)

August 12th, 2007

Just back from RTDA trade show ( Retail Tobacco Dealers of America) which was held this year in humid, hot and sunny Houston Texas :-)

Great to meet up with suppliers of C.Gars Ltd,fellow cigars smokers, old friends as well as making many new friends.

I have found and am importing many humidors, lighters, cutters and other accessories that can not otherwise be found in the UK …as ever at lowest prices in the UK :-)

Enjoyed a few smokes and drinks at 10 Downing street http://www.downingstreetpub.com/ well worth a visit.Attentive service as well as a well stocked bar and fabulous walk in humidor.

Thanks to all my friends who spent time herfing with me in Downing street.

Had a delightful dinner at Vic & Anthony’s: ( thanks David and Joe) check it out at http://www.vicandanthonys.com/flash_content/index.html Cigar friendly in the bar I am pleased to report:-)

For a fabulous range of wines and cigars in Houston Specs is well worth a visit http://www.specsonline.com/

Smoked many a fine cigar in Dallas too ( Thanks Joe,Frank,Larry and many many others) and would highly recommend Del Frisco which has an excellent cigar bar as well as some first rate live music. Find it at 5251 Spring Valley Road Dallas, Texas 75240-3007

A few friends recommended that I visit Paesanos restaurant in San Antonio so I zipped over there on a South West flight for lunch and can honestly say this was one of the finest restaurants I have ever experienced in the US.

The bar was cigar friendly and as son as I lit up my cigar, one of the attentive waiting staff immediately brought me over a cigar ashtray…very impressive.

The restaurant was spacious and comfortable and exceptionally busy yet the service was still absolutely first rate.

With a comprehensive wine list and food menu to satisfy the most discerning diner as well as fussy eaters like me..(!)…you won’t be disappointed.

I understand that there are a few restaurants in the chain …checkout their website it’s very cool http://paesanos.com/

Texas is not the easiest State to find smoking venues but I managed to get by …with a little help from my friends:-) …and I’m looking forward to going back in the near future

new maduros are in….and goooood :-)

July 17th, 2007

Just received our first small allocation of the new Hoyo Regalos and Romeo Escudos ( 2007 limited edition maduro) from Hunters and Frankau….and I’m smoking both:-)….for sampling purposes of course.

Both cigars have smooth vein free dark, oily maduro wrappers.

I love the size of the Hoyo…this could actually be the perfect size for me.The cigars is smooth and well balanced, complex with an easy draw and a delightful aroma.Medium fruity flavours with medium strength and a rather unique blend although it does remind me somewhat of the Hoyo Epicure especial LE.

The thicker girth Romeo is a true delight, sweet, and toast flavours from the first easy draw with a slight woodsy background and hints of spice.Beautifully crafted and sure to please the experienced Havana cigar smoker

Well done to our friends at Habanos S.A. this blending is first rate and it’s our pleasure to offer cigars of such excellent quality appearance and blending.

Top up your humidor while you can as we expect to be sold out in the next few days.

I have made the new maduros available in boxes, singles and samplers for those who want to try out these splendid smokes

Maduro 5 launched !

July 9th, 2007

The new Cohiba maduro 5 range was launched by Hunters and Frankau at Carlton terrace Gardens on the 5th July.

The first Cigar party since the smoking ban in England was enjoyed by 100’s of cigars smokers enjoying the 3 new Cohibas from the new Maduro 5 line of this best selling brand

We enjoyed Mojitos and an excellent BBQ on a warm if rainy summers evening whilst listening to an excellent Cuban band

The maduro 5 cigars have proved an instant success with C.Gars Ltd clients with our allocation virtually selling out within the first 48 hours of being available

Congrats to JJ Fox who were awarded the coveted Silver Chaveta award by Simon Chase of Hunters and Frankau.

James Suckling from Cigar Aficionado magazine was at the party and has an interesting report on his blog.

Our competition winners enjoyed free tickets to the event and many industry personalities attended as well as cigar chomping TV personality Jimmy Savile

Thanks to Hunters for a fantastic evening and thanks to Habanos for the greatest cigars in the world:-)

The Last Gasp

July 1st, 2007

Just back from a fabulous weekends herfing in Falmouth Cornwall for “The Last Gasp” herf……in fact the last indoor smoking event before the stupid public smoking ban came into force in England at 6 a.m this morning.

Over 100 fellow cigar smokers herfed the weekend away at meeting at various times at The Falmouth Hotel and the main event at “The Shed” restaurant.

Thanks to Jim Biddle owner of the Shed for his kind hospitality ( you guessed it..he enjoys a find Havana) and thanks to co sponsor Andy Connew and his Cornwall Crew for putting on such a great event.

Cigars smokers came from as far as the USA as well as Europe to make this a very special event and it certainly was.

We were interviewed by newspapers and television and hope to put details on the website in the next few days.

The raffle and auction were very successful and enjoyed by all. Thanks to all who donated prizes and thanks to Hunters and Frankau for donating some of their finest Ramon Allones belicosos for the event.

Here’s an extract from my speech….

Ladies, gentlemen , fellow cigar lovers – and anti-smokers – we are about to witness a sad historical moment – for tonight 500 years of history will come to an end – and the rights of England’s smokers will be snuffed out.

Gone will be the days when we could share an ashtray indoors in a public place. There’ll be no more nipping down the pub for a pint and a smoke. From now on it will be, “Pint of beer and a nicotine patch, sir?” down your local.

There’ll be no more cigars with your favourite tipple after dinner in your favourite club or restaurant. Those of you who use company cars will have to sit on the roof and steer the vehicle with their feet – if they wish to continue smoking while travelling. And if a plumber or health visitor comes round your home – they won’t enter it unless you promise not to blow smoke in their face.

Can you imagine treating Sir Winston Churchill – Britain’s most famous cigar smoker – in such a cavalier fashion? At the very least, you’d get the V for Victory sign and an earful of invective.

The good news is that England’s specialist tobacco retailers are exempt from the smoking ban – provided that neither their staff or their customers actually enjoy the cigars they are sampling. The trouble is, most fine hand-rolled cigars take anywhere between 30 minutes to a couple of hours to get through, and that’s a awful long time to have to keep a straight face.

And if that particular cigar doesn’t suit you, you’ll just have to sample another – until you find the box you really want. The whole cigar-buying process could take days – some of us may even have extend our retail areas to accommodate all this sampling.

Meanwhile, many hotels in England plan to continue to offer designated smoking rooms for their nicotine-friendly guests, for money talks and there’s well over twelve million adult smokers in the UK. And as that guest room is – under hotel hospitality law - the equivalent of your own home – you’ll be allowed to invite all your friends in for a smoke and a drink. Just make sure you open the windows – and don’t set fire to the bed.

As tobacco is still the unofficial currency of England’s prisons, you could always refuse to pay the fine for smoking a cigar in public and get banged up in a smoker-friendly cell. Even better, England’s prison warders will refuse to enter your cell until you’ve stopped smoking. And if they run out of smoker-friendly cells, you’ll be able to sue the Government for compensation. Meanwhile, if a packet of cigarettes is like liquid gold in a prison – what’s a box of Montecristo No.2s worth? Perhaps you could use it to bribe the prison Governor and get an early release.

The bad news is that, in future, unless we meet in each other’s homes – or on Bodmin Moor - we’ll be sitting around sadly sniffing our unlit cigars and talking about the good old times when we used to set the world alight – from our mutual love of the finest things of life, not least, a fine cigar.

But there’s nothing in the present anti-smoking bill to stop us all drowning our sorrows in alcohol so I’ve doubled my order for after-dinner drinks. And as it now seems easier to buy hard drugs than tobacco, I’ve placed an additional order for some cannabis, heroin and crack cocaine – which will no doubt continue to be freely available to anyone who wants it – usually outside the nearest school gates.

Which reminds me of the anti-smoking bureaucrat who went to the doctor and said, “Doctor, every morning when I get up and look in the mirror I see an ugly, unreasonable, lying, narrow-minded, born-again puritanical bastard with no sense of humour, integrity or fair play - and it makes me feel like throwing up. What’s wrong with me?”
“I don’t know,” said the doctor, “but your eyesight’s perfect.”

Fortunately my eyesight’s also pretty good despite what they say about the effects of passive smoking – in fact it’s quite clear to me and anyone who cares to surf the Net that there has NEVER been any evidence that passive smoking causes lung cancer.

Perhaps if the British Government put as much effort into our rapidly deteriorating national health service as it has into banning and policing a perfectly legal product known as tobacco, we wouldn’t be concerned about the current health of our country, or its future as a rest home for our poorer Eastern European neighbours – who are especially welcome for they smoke more than we do.

Which reminds me of the cigar lover who rang Samaritans the other day and told them he was so suicidal what with the idea of not being allowed to smoke anywhere in England outside of his own home that he had decided to kill himself sooner rather than later. “I have just tried to end it all by taking 1,000 aspirins,” he said.
“What happened?” said the Samaritan.
“Oh, after the first two,” said the man, “ I felt a lot better.”

Now you may laugh – and please do, for at the moment the British Government hasn’t yet banned jokes – but the one person who has made this evening feel so much better is Andy……. who not only organised this excellent dinner but has been one of the lynchpins of our exclusive band of cigar aficionados.

I would also like to thank all the cigar smokers who are still the mainstay of my business. May you all remain healthy, wealthy and happy, and long continue filling your ashtrays – preferably with my cigars. And may you buy even more humidors to keep your cigars in, and let the rest of us know where you are hiding so we can join you in a carefree smoke.

Now before you allow a fug of despair to settle on your nicotine-companion souls, let me assure you that the fight is by no means over. In most countries that have introduced a smoking ban – the sales of fine premium cigars has risen dramatically, as former cigarette smokers have decided to smoke less but smoke better.

And there is a point where no Government will go beyond – a bottom limit for the amount of tobacco taxation they’re prepared to lose. Who knows, in a couple of years if the sales of cigarettes disappear in a puff of smoke, the Government may well insist that we all start smoking again – to reboost the National Health Service.

But please rest assured - smokers will always find somewhere to enjoy a fine cigar – look for ethnic restaurants – especially Chinese - late at night when the waiters and chefs relax over an ashtray. Or for pubs that have the smokers’ equivalent of lock-ins. They’re known as Smoke-easies - - you just knock on the door, sniff the air, and if it comes filtered through exhaled cigar smoker – you enter and have a great time among friends.

Such to the nature of the ban, seasonal smoking in England will increase – and on warm dry evenings you will be able to make even more friends – with the aid of a lighter. It’s at times like this when you may be glad of all this global warming…

Please raise your glasses with me and say farewell to the first 500 hundred years of tobacco history – and spit in the eye of the new politically correct world we are now facing.

Thank you for your company and friendship – long may it continue. Please keep on smoking, drinking and thinking – and one day we may get the ban reversed.

The Spirit world….and smokes too :-)

June 23rd, 2007

Tuesday: lunch with friends at Langans…good food, wine and spirits, service, ambience and smokes…went through my usual combo 1 BBF followed by 1 RAB followed by a Partagas P2 . No matter what day I go to Langans,it’s always busy and it’s always buzzy http://www.langansrestaurants.co.uk/ very relaxed afternoon but had to zoom off early as Karyns committee was having a charity clairvoyant evening.

Well done Karyn and co. for raising a few thousand Pounds for your charity. Many did not find the Clairvoyant very amusing…… I did though as I had been in the spirit world for the whole afternoon already.Actually he was not that good as I asked him to hook me up with Zino Davidoff and he was unable to…..C’est la vie…. He looked like he should make contact with a dietician and perhaps my tailor.

Wednesday I was invited to “The last Smokers Luncheon” organized by AITS ( The Association of Independent Tobacco Specialists) at the Landmark Hotel. http://www.landmarklondon.co.uk/

Chairman Mike Davies ( of Frederick Tranter….jolly good cigar merchants ) made a welcoming speech,Gordon Bridges of the Tobacco Trade Benevolent Association held the raffle that raised some £1000’s for charity and the guest speaker was Boris Johnson M.P. who,if one could understand him ( he talks rather fast) was one of the funniest people I have ever listened to in my life.he was seriously hysterically funny!

The lunch was rather good and many of us moved on to The Cricketers off Baker street for drinks and smokes. The Cricketers has a pleasant outdoor smoking area that will be made good use of after the ban commences no doubt. Thanks to my partner Michael Adler of Cadogan for the kind invitation.

1 week to go till the smoking ban in England….but are we bothered?

Well, yes actually we are…. as the law is quite pathetic, tarring cigar smokers with the same brush as cigarette smokers.

Risks of smoking a fine Havana?….sure ,you may well fall over you are so relaxed :-)

I gather many restaurants will be offering outdoor smoking areas and no doubt we will provide a full list on the website in due course.

Roll on global warming I say !…what jolly good timing.Perhaps we should all get aerosols out and knock out a bit more of the ozone layer to warm up all us outdoor smokers !

Next Saturday evening I shall be attending “The Last Gasp” herf in Falmouth organized by my dear friend Andy Connew.

Together with around 100 fellow cigar smokers including members of ClubHavana, we shall enjoy a splendid meal, the best Havanas compliments of C.Gars Ltd and Hunters and Frankau and some delicious libations no doubt.

We’ll also be smoking a good stogie in memory of our friend Robert Duff who sadly passed away recently. Our thoughts go out to his family.

Cohiba maduros available to order now. http://www.cgarsltd.co.uk/

Shipping to clients outside the UK this week and inside the UK on July the 6th following the Hunters and Frankau launch on the 5th July. The cigars look quite magnificent and the ones I have already tried were very very good indeed.

Bolivar Gold Medals expected next month.Boxes of 10 for sale outside UK only ( sorreee !).Email with expressions of interest fast please as no doubt they will all be pre ordered in the next 15 seconds.

Montecristo Reserva,Partagas Replica and Upmann book humidor all expected later this year ( I reckon September’ish) so lots of good stuff still to come including PL Magnificos in September of course…the cigar that I am living for this year!

It seems to be vintage cigar season for me with new “old ” stuff arriving almost every day.If you’re looking for anything in particular email me sales@cgarsltd.co.uk as most of the aged cigars that come in….go straight out to clients who have an established wish list with C.Gars Ltd.

Well,it’s a Sunday garden herf at my house assuming we have a little sunshine followed by a wine and cigar tasting at the office Monday afternoon…seems like a civil way to start my working week :-) Guest cigar smoker is Brian Ebbesen ( previously of Christies currently of Ellistons Fine Wines) Brian will be zipping over in his Ferrari no doubt and leaving ….by taxi.

Have a smokey weekend :-)
